DAY 5: Glacier Park, St. Mary’s
Upon entering Glacier Park we stopped at the visitor center in St. Mary’s to ask about the area, what trails they suggest, driving the Going to the Sun road (it had just opened the day before we arrived), bear sightings, and of course picked up our junior ranger booklets. One of the best tips the ranger gave us was to get an early start as parking is limited at trail heads. The kids were troopers and had no problems waking up at 6:30 in the morning for us to head out by 7am. The views we encounter were well worth raising early. The images I’m sharing are from the east side of Glacier entering in through St. Mary’s. Snow greeted us and the temps were about high 50’s to low 60’s during our stay.
Our hike to Virginia Falls took us through the valley, across the river, and then back up again. Since this was our first hiking trail in Glacier, Bryan and I were just a bit on edge (I was a freaked out) only because of the bears and we did have a little guy with us that could be easily picked off. We did put Peyton in the middle of the group and he did a great job talking and singing non-stop so we hopefully wouldn’t surprise a bear. On a side note we did have bear spray and knew how to use it. Bear bells weren’t to useful since we were next to water and the sound of the falls were too loud.
Thanks for stopping by.
